AEP is dedicated to power
quality research specializing in power quality mitigation devices and
techniques. Our facility is equipped to conduct sag simulations
and power quality monitor calibrations. We custom-test a variety of
industrial equipment including adjustable speed drives, programmable logic
controllers, contractors, relays, constant voltage transformers,
uninterruptible power supplies, and other electronic equipment.
The facility is a full-service test center for consumer and industrial
electronic equipment. Computer-controlled three-phase arbitrary waveform
generators, capable of sourcing up to 50 kW, generate harmonics, transients,
sags, surges, or outages of variable lengths. ASDs up to 20 hp can be fully
characterized. A portable 20,000 watt-three-phase source capable of generating
sags, swells and outages is available for on-site surveys.
Equipment parameters such
as power, efficiency, voltage flicker, power factor, and harmonic content are
measured with NIST-traceable equipment. If isolation is required, AEP has a
proprietary measurement system that provides in excess of 2500 Vrms isolation,
with a bandwidth of 500 kHz. Measurement capabilities are rounded out with a
variety of current shunts, current transformers, and high-voltage probes.
Instrumentation grade analog and digital tape recorders and computer-controlled
data acquisition equipment provide flexible, real time measurement recording
systems. The precision sources and the NIST-traceable measurement devices are
also used to perform calibration verification for field power quality
equipment, including recording devices. AEP also has a process line simulation
used to provide a test bed for industrial equipment and to provide a convenient
training facility for investigators.
